“We Don’t Drop Catches, We Rest Them”: Aakash Chopra Fires Back at Trolls After Pakistan’s WT20 WC Performance

As the saying goes, “Catches win matches,” but the Pakistan women’s cricket team seemed to defy this during their crucial Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 clash against New Zealand. Despite limiting New Zealand to a modest total of 110 runs, Pakistan’s fielders dropped an astonishing 8 catches, sealing their elimination from the tournament. This dismal fielding performance not only cost Pakistan their semi-final hopes but also dashed Team India’s chances, who were relying on Pakistan to defeat New Zealand to advance.

The performance triggered widespread debate on social media, with many questioning Pakistan’s fielding efforts. Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra took to X (formerly Twitter) to offer his sarcastic take on the situation.

Aakash Chopra’s Response on Social Media

“In Asia, we don’t ‘drop’ players…we ‘rest’ them. In fact, we don’t even drop catches…we rest the ball on the ground,” Chopra quipped, referencing the fielding blunders.

Chopra’s tweet ignited an intense back-and-forth with fans, some of whom attempted to troll him. In response, Chopra remained fiery and undeterred, continuing to engage with those who questioned his post.

Pakistan’s Collapse and India’s Exit

India’s fate in the Women’s T20 World Cup hinged on Pakistan defeating New Zealand. After restricting the White Ferns to 110 for 6 in 20 overs, Pakistan seemed well-positioned to pull off a win. However, their batting collapsed in dramatic fashion, managing just 56 runs in 11.4 overs, handing New Zealand a comfortable 54-run victory.

New Zealand’s win secured their place in the semi-finals with three victories in Group A, while Australia topped the group. India’s hopes were crushed by Pakistan’s defeat, ending their World Cup journey.
