Smartphone Sales Surge During Festive Season in India

The festive season in India has once again driven a significant increase in smartphone sales. The first major sale event of the season, running from September 26 to October 6, saw leading e-commerce platforms such as Amazon and Flipkart launch their respective Great Indian Festival Sale and Big Billion Days Sale. Several other retailers also joined in, offering attractive discounts and deals during this period.

Smartphone Sales See 11% Growth

According to a media report based on a survey by TechInsights, smartphone sales in the first wave of the festive season grew by 11% year-over-year. The sale ran for 11 days, compared to seven or eight days in previous years. During this time, Samsung emerged as the top seller in terms of volume, capturing nearly 20% of the market share. The brand’s most popular models included the Galaxy M35, Galaxy S23, Galaxy A14, and Galaxy S23 FE.

Factors Behind the Sales Boost

The extended sale period, improved marketing strategies, and increased discounts from smartphone brands were key factors driving the sales boost this year. Despite these successes, Samsung faces challenges in its business, including plans to lay off a significant number of workers in various countries. The company is reportedly preparing to reduce its workforce by about 10% in certain regions, facing stiff competition from rivals like SK Hynix in the memory chip market, which is heavily utilized in artificial intelligence technology.

Samsung’s Workforce Restructuring

Bloomberg has reported that Samsung employs more than 267,000 workers globally, with over 147,000 stationed overseas. The company is downsizing in regions such as Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia, though there are no plans for layoffs in South Korea. Sources familiar with the matter revealed that Samsung’s Singapore office held meetings earlier this week where HR managers discussed severance packages with affected workers.
